Hot water with lemon, please.
As of this year, I've pretty much cut coffee out of my diet (does coffee ice cream count?) TBH, I can't drink it without any sugar and creamer, and the weird thick goop left by my Coffee Mate at the bottom of the mug was starting to gross me out. That, and I can feel my heart making like Usain Bolt in the 200m dash after my first sip, so I decided that it was time to change up my morning libation routine.
I have dabbled in black tea in the mornings, and while that offers the same pick-me-up without the jitters, I have found that all I need to get me (and my insides) going is a mug of hot lemon water.
Once, while getting my oil changed, I saw Kelly Ripa talk about one of Google's most searched phrases of 2015. It was "Hot Lemon Water Recipe". She proceeded to talk about how insane she thought that was, because all you do is put a slice of lemon into a mug of hot water. At first, I was like "yeah, people are so dumb!!" but then I started thinking- does the temperature really matter? How big of a slice? Do I squeeze lemon juice into the mug, or just drop a slice? Are we talking about a mug or a thermos?
Turns out- it really doesn't matter. Hot water is supposed to do a little more for you, but lemon in general is so beneficial, you can't go wrong. You can even put a dash of honey along with it if you can't handle the tartness. I ask for lemons in all my waters now, because I can't deny how good it makes me feel.
Here's 4 reasons why you should start waking up with lemon:
1. DETOX! Hot water + lemon will wake up your liver and help flush toxins out of your body. Plus, it can help balance your body's pH.
2. DIGESTION! Give it a few mornings, and you'll notice that your digestive tract wakes right up, just like it used to with coffee. When your insides get moving early, that means your body can absorb more nutrients throughout the day, and the food you eat later on will digest that much easier.
3. FIBER! I wouldn't go so far as saying "WEIGHT LOSS!", but lemon does contain pectin, which is a soluble fiber that some say helps aid in weight-loss.
4. FEELS GOOD! I just feel better after I drink a glass. I don't get heartburn much, but lemon water can help reduce acidity in your stomach. Plus, it helps fight bloating. So if I've just partaken in a rather large feast, I like to follow up with a mug of lemon water to help my organs out.
